Mount Kinabalu in Sabah is a one from the others famous tourism icon in Malaysia that was must you visit if you come to Sabah. Mt Kinabalu (4095m) is one of the tallest mountains in
South-East Asia and is situated in the Kinabalu National Park in the province
of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo. Thousands of tourists visit Kinabalu National
Park each year and most come with the intention of climbing Mt Kinabalu. Most climbers take two days to ascend and descend Mt
Kinabalu. Kinabalu
National Park or Taman Negara Kinabalu was established as one of the first
national parks of Malaysia in 1964.
The mountain and its surroundings are among the most
important biological sites in the world, with between 5000 and 6000 species of
plants, 326 species of birds,
and more than 100 mammalian species identified. Among this rich collection of
wildlife are famous species such as the gigantic Rafflesia
plants and the orangutan. Mount Kinabalu has been accorded UNESCO World
Heritage status.
This botanical site is blessed with astonishing variety of
flora and fauna that ranges over 4 climate zones; from rich lowland dipterocarp
forest through the montane oak, rhododendron, to the coniferous forests, to the
alpine meadow plants, and to the stunted bushes of summit zone. The mountain is
famous for its many carnivorous plant and orchid species, most notably
Nepenthes rajah. Its is also home to a multitude of endemic animal species,
including the Kinabalu Giant Red Leech and Kinabalu Giant Earthworm.
